At the beginning of this year, my goal was to read 24 books by the end of the year. With only a couple days left in 2017, I throw in the towel. Although I didn’t hit the goal, I’m happy to report that I read 17 novels this year! A great jumpstart to getting back into reading. I’m looking forward to doing even better numbers next year. In the meantime, I take some time to look back on what I read this year.
MOST ENJOYABLE READ
Mary Roach’s Gulp was great because of the sheer gross factor. Every chapter had some horrific story about how far scientists have gone to make discoveries about the human body. From some dude with a hole in his stomach to Elvis and his super colon, Mary Roach guides us through the entire digestive tract and stays funny and clever throughout.
MOST AGONIZING READ
I wrote a review on this one. I get that the dog dies and comes back as different dogs, but reading through the actual deaths is triggering and border line traumatic. I don’t know, maybe I’m being overly sensitive about it, but it didn’t make for enjoyable reading, in my opinion. Aside from that, the prose is so bad. It’s from the perspective of the dog, I get it, but it’s so bad and doesn’t make for a good reading experience.
2018 GOALS:
24 books read
More female authors
More writers of color
More non-fiction (specifically, I’d like to read more political science and literary theory books. Particularly around racial politics and institutional racism).
Back to weekly blog posts about what I’m reading! This keeps me accountable for both my reading and writing goals.
